Itinerary

Day 1 · Almaty - Issyk Scythian Museum - Issyk Lake - Turgen Gorge - Bear Waterfall - camp

Morning pick-up in Almaty. We drive east along the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau on the historic Kuldja Road, part of the Silk Road. Our first stop is the museum of Saki (Scythian) culture near Issyk, in the Valley of Kings, famous for the ancient burial mounds of rulers and warriors. One of the excavated mounds can be visited during the museum excursion, which takes about 45 minutes.

Next we head into the mountains to Lake Issyk, whose waters change colour with the light and season, from steel grey to turquoise. The surrounding mountain peaks make this one of the most beautiful lakes near Almaty.

After lunch, we continue to Turgen Gorge, known for its forests, rivers and waterfalls. We take an easy walk to Bear Waterfall, enjoying the mountain scenery along the way.

In the late afternoon we arrive at the Trekking Club camp, settle into furnished tents, enjoy dinner and spend the night in a glamping-style setting.

Day 2 · Jeep-tour by Assy highland plateau - Almaty

Breakfast at a camp, drive up by the gorge (real off-road!) to the Assy Plateau.
The road starts in the forest zone of Turgen gorge, and climbs up through the thicket that ends suddenly at a height of 2600 meters ASL. And a boundless green highland valley appears.
The Kazakh nomads use Asy plateau for the thousands of years as a summer pasture, and they are still there with their goats, sheep, horses and white yurts. Enjoy the
nomadic wanders: immense highlands full of beautiful happy animals, white beads of yurts scattered here and there across the vast plateau, shepherds followed by their faithful Tazy dogs, ancient Saki (Scythian) ruins and burial pyramids, Bronze Age rock carvings, and of course wildlife.

After a picnic on the plateau with incredible views of Tien Shan snow peaks and glaciers, we stop to see the Assy space observatory and drive down to the camp.

At a camp we pack and drive back to Almaty
