Canyons Almaty

Kok Zhailau Almaty 
KOK ZHAILAU is a name of a highland plateau (foothills of Zailisky Alatau ridge) located between the Maloalmatinsky and Big Almaty gorges, at 1600m-2200m ASL. «Zhailau» in Kazak language means «pasture» - the valley was used by local nomads as a summer feed for the hundreds of years. Nowadays it looks perfect in terms of highland hiking.

The best way to see an everyday nomadic life is to come to ASY (ASSY) PLATEAU – one of the biggest and most popular dzhailau place (summer pasture) in Almaty area. The Asy plateau is just 100km far from Amaty to the east: you may come via Turgen gorge or from Bartogay lake. Observatory, rock carvings, Scythe burials and wildlife: all this can be found in Asy.

Butakovka Almaty

BUTAKOVKA is a name of a lateral gorge in Maloalmatinsky ravine, Zailisky Alatau mountains. Being a part of Almaty city, the entrance to the canyon is easily reachable by bus or car so the gorge looks really popular among the citizens. The location provides great opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking and camping.

Turgen waterfalls

Turgen gorge is located 80km to the east from Almaty: being 45km long, it starts near Turgen village and ends at a foot of Asy pass. Turgen is one of the most beautiful gorges in Zailisky range. Turgen valley is best known for its WATERFALLS: there are 7 big falls in this area but 2 of them are must visit places: a Bear and Kairak ones.

TAMGALY TAS is a name of a tract located at a right bank of Ili river, 120km to the north from Almaty (it is a steppe). It is sometimes confused with another one called “Tamgaly”petroglyphs located 170km to the northwest from the city, so it looks reasonable to add “Ili river” when consider Tamgaly Tas. Being a beautiful natural spot, Tamgaly Tas is popular among Almaty citizens as a week-end camping site.

ALTYN EMEL NATIONAL PARK

Altyn Emel National Park was established in 1996. The total area of the Park is about 520,000 ha, which makes it the biggest park in Kazakhstan. Its territory includes western ridges of Djungarsky Alatau Mountains, Aktau chalk hills, Katutau volcano, Bes Shatyr sacred area with prehistoric dolmens and a famous Singing Sand Dune.
